Generative engine optimization

Generative engine optimization is the work of making a brand easier for an answer engine to describe accurately and to cite. The outcome is AI visibility: when a buyer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Claude a question in your category, the answer either includes you or it does not, and the description is either fair or it is not.

AI visibility is the outcome

People use the phrase generative engine optimization, or GEO, for the practice. Prompt Presence uses AI visibility for the thing you can observe: mentions, tone, competitors, and the pages an answer cites. The names point at the same job.

Nothing here guarantees a recommendation. An assistant writes a new answer every time. What you can earn is evidence of where you appear, where a competitor is named instead, and which fixes are yours to make.

What to measure

Four facts are enough to steer the work. Visibility is the share of tracked answers that mention the brand at all. Sentiment is the tone of those mentions. Share of voice puts your mentions next to the competitors a buyer would actually compare. Cited sources are the pages the answer relies on.

A single blended score hides a gap on one assistant. Read each model on its own. Buyers do not all ask the same one, and an average can make a missing mention look like a small dip.

How this differs from SEO

Classic SEO earns a ranking in a list of links. Generative engine optimization earns a place inside a written answer. Some of the work overlaps: a clear site, consistent facts, pages that answer real questions. The goal is different.

A page can rank and still be absent, or misdescribed, when someone asks an assistant. Fixing the answer is not the same project as chasing a blue link, even when one change helps both.

What a team can change

You do not control the model. You control the material it can find. Say who you are, who you serve, and what you sell in plain language on your own site. Publish pages that answer the questions buyers ask before they choose. Keep third-party descriptions aligned with that story, because assistants cite other people's pages, not only yours.

Treat llms.txt, a sitemap, and structured data as labels that help a crawler understand the site. They are worth having. They are not a trick that forces a mention.

A practical sequence

Read the answers that exist today before you rewrite the site. A seven-day free trial is a first snapshot on the models included in the plan you are trying. The AI Visibility Audit is one offer, listed at €299, $339 or £259. It runs ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, then delivers a written report, a 30-day action plan, and a 30-minute walkthrough.

Then fix the highest-impact gaps, and keep measuring. Answers move. A one-off look goes stale.

Plans have names

Prompt Presence tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. The audit runs all four. Scale and Agency include all four on an ongoing subscription. Starter includes ChatGPT and Perplexity; Pro adds Gemini. Those models are part of the plan, not add-ons you buy one by one.

Ongoing tracking is sold as Starter, Pro and Scale, at the monthly prices on the homepage. Agency is for portfolios and is talk-to-us, with pricing agreed up front. It is not a fourth self-serve price.

Questions

Is generative engine optimization the same as SEO?

No. SEO is about ranking pages in search results. Generative engine optimization is about how AI answers describe, compare and cite a brand. Some fixes help both. The goal is different.

Can you guarantee that an assistant will recommend us?

No. Prompt Presence shows where you appear, where competitors are named instead, and the fixes you control. That evidence is the product.

Which models does the audit include, and what does it cost?

The AI Visibility Audit is one offer, listed at €299, $339 or £259. It runs ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, then delivers a written report, a 30-day action plan, and a 30-minute walkthrough. It is not a subscription tier.

Do we need our own API keys?

No. Tracking runs on Prompt Presence infrastructure. AI costs for the tracked models are included in the subscription or the audit fee.
